Drawing from this legacy, Irwin’s `Chinwag` exhibition features a series of human-like 3D figures called ‘Peeps’. On this day 2 May in 1778, young John Soane arrived in Rome 🇮🇹, the ultimate destination of his Grand Tour. In Rome Soane wrote home, "my attention is entirely taken up in the seeing and examining the numerous and inestimable remains of Antiquity…" He produced many measured drawings and ground plans of Roman buildings and drew many architectural inspirations for his later projects including Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery 🏛️.
For example, Pitzhanger Manor’s main façade is modelled after the triumphal Arch of Constantine, which had been a standing monument in Rome for over one and a half millennia in Soane’s time!
